I am not a big fan of the work of Jef Koons so I found it interesting that his work was one of the most expensive pieces of art to ever sell at an auction. I enjoy Michael Green’s response to this piece artistically however I don’t really understand how he would expect to sell a digital file on eBay. With the rise of NFTs, I have never really understood the value of them and it often seems like the value of most NFTs isn’t actually based on the quality of the art or the artist who created it. As someone who enjoys creating digital art, I know that there is great value in digital art, however, selling a file of a single GIF doesn’t seem reasonable to me. When you purchase NFTs, you have some form of ownership of the digital art in the form of a verifiable certificate. With Michael Green’s “Balloon Dog Deflated”, there is no difference between buying the art and downloading the file directly at no cost. I believe this is why nobody decided to buy it. I also don’t agree with the idea of digital art destroying traditional forms of art and I think that there will always be a need and appreciation for traditional art forms. Instead, I think digital art is a completely new medium and offers new ways for artists to express themselves in ways that aren't necessarily possible with any traditional art forms. Overall, I enjoyed this article and I am curious whether or not the piece has sold since this article was released.
