Artist Statement:
Since I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated by complex shapes, especially fractals. A fractal is an infinitely complex pattern. Fractals are able to be infinite because they repeat in a predictable yet beautiful way. There's something completely mesmerizing about seeing such a pattern and I often find myself lost in the intricate details of a fractal for a very long time.
For my Zine project, I wanted to capture the infinite feeling that fractals can show you. I wanted the cover of the page to show clearly what the zine would include so I created a smaller version of a fractal with integrated text. For each of my 8 inside pages, I created a unique fractal with a central focal point right in the center of the page to further tie them together. My goal for this project was to give the viewer a unique feeling from each of the spiraling fractals. To accomplish this, I used a variety of different colors, opacities, and shapes to create these fractal designs and I spent a lot of time making sure each one felt like its own unique piece. For the back cover of my zine, I wanted to create a piece that was more different from the others and I chose to make a version with several different fractals to further emphasize the infiniteness. Overall, I’m very proud of the final result and I’m especially proud of how well the different pages fit together as a collection. If I were to do this project again, I would like to experiment with more different types of fractals.
